Shell of a boatwreck,
no windows, just afloat, and
a blanket inside.
Aston (Clinton) Hill
No access, no seat,
no view, only memories
of a place once loved.
Light show
These insects, flying
in sun above the water:
a dancing light show.
Each insect makes a
striated blur, where rhythmic
wingbeats catch the sun.
after the rain
The day-long rain stops:
sudden sun spreads brilliance
on the still-wet ground.
Evening
Sweet sounds of birdsong
greet the sunset – songs of the
struggle for dear life.
Arduous
Going uphill has always been hard work. Even on the canals, going up or down at a lock has always been a lengthy and arduous process of opening and closing sluices and gates to harness the energy of falling water. Hard work is built in. It’s good that new technologies are making regenerative braking easier to do, saving some of the energy of the downhills to use on the uphills.
In Sunday’s lectionary, the first Christians are having their first major disagreement – about accepting Gentiles. Peter speaks to the conservative faction and they change their minds, and the church moves on to greater things. May God give us all the grace to change our minds when it is right, to stand firm when that is right, and the wisdom to know the difference.
The weather changes:
God help me respond rightly
to the signs of change.
Hooves
Hooves, mud, baking sun;
anklebusting bridleway:
walking in England.
Morning
Gentle, grey morning,
muted birdsong in the shires,
earth’s unspoken strength.
From the Lectionary for today…
Dorcas, disciple,
she was not less than a man,
graceful as our God.
Forgotten?
Headlines demoted,
semi-forgotten, but the
suffering goes on.
Showers
Serious showers:
like May, tearing the sky with
possibilities.
