So, in next Sunday’s lectionary, Jesus gets baptised. I think this is another example of him showing his solidarity with the human race – and therefore God’s solidarity with the human race. As Brian Wren has it,
“Not throned above, remotely high,
untouched, unmoved by human pains
but daily, in the midst of life,
our Saviour, in the Godhead reigns.”
God of love,
may your kingdom come
on this planet,
in this dust,
in this atmosphere,
in these oceans.
Help us be safe from the consequences
of our own fear
and our own selfishness.
Take away our fear of being out-competed.
Take away our selfishness.
May this world sing again
songs of praises to its Creator.
