What this website does...

This website shows you prayers (in the Christian tradition) connected to particular places in the UK. Most prayers also have photos to go with them. At the moment (2nd July 2020), many of the 223 prayers are in a broad band between Woodhead and Manchester, but in time it's hoped to make them more extensive. We hope this will be suitable for any device; computer, tablet or smartphone for use out among the places.

The Home Page

When you first go to the website, the Home Page is what you find. This contains two things;- a set of Buttons with which to choose what you want next, and a Top Bar which is there to give you some control on every page of the website.

The Home Page Buttons

• "View Prayers" takes you to the full set of prayers.
• "View Nearest Prayers" takes you to the nearest six prayers to your location. The website will try to get your location from your device (it will need your permission for this), and if that fails it will ask you where you are. You can enter your postcode, or your latitude and longitude, such as 53.46145,-1.96626, or your "what3words" location. Note that computers can sometimes give a misleading location, if they are connected to the internet via somewhere else. Also a mobile device's location may be a little out if there are buildings around - do not walk into the canal.
• "Search for Prayers" enables you to search for prayers, either by specifying a word (or part of a word), or choosing the author, or searching for prayers made within the last so many days. We hope there will be more options under this heading in due course.
• "View Prayers on Map" shows you a map, with the prayers marked on it. If your location is available, this is also marked on the map with a round purplish symbol. If you are on the move, click on the symbol in the bottom left corner to realign the map to your actual location. You can click on any of the prayer markers, and it will show you the prayer.
• "Create a Prayer" is for those wishing to write a prayer. They will need to contact the organisers to get login details first.
• "Logout" only applies to those creating a prayer.

The Top Bar

The Top Bar is present on each of the pages of this website. The first button takes you back to the Home Page. The second button takes you back to the page you were on previously. The third button applies to those pages which show prayers, and lets you view where they are on a map. The first three buttons do not work when they are greyed out. The fourth thing is a switch (grey = "off" and blue = "on"). When it is on, the website will not try to use your device to get your location, but will ask you every time it needs your location. The fifth is also a switch. When it is on, pictures (where available) will be shown along with the prayers. To see a picture bigger, click on it. Higher resolution versions of most pictures are available on request to pfp@bobjanet.org.uk.

Watch out for...

It can take up to 20 seconds before some devices or computers find / fail to find a location - so you may experience temporary blankness.

I am Bob Warwicker, and if you have any queries or bugs to report, contact us on pfp@bobjanet.org.uk and I will try to help. As of July 2020, all the prayers are from Janet Lees and me. We hope to add more locations and prayers as time goes by. The site itself also needs more work: possibilities include search for prayers by author, by theme, by time of year, etc. etc..
